the Turkish Bazaar, Spice Blend

Foreign travel has been a regular and large part of life since I was around 3 months old, with family connections around North America and holidaying throughout Europe, especially the Mediterranean. The culinary influence is felt no where better perhaps than with this family meal I pull out from time to time, never often enough to loose the allure though.

There is a perfect pairing of rich tomato sauce and hearty ground meat that make this a definite contender for top ten comfort foods at the family dinner table.

The classically American 'Spaghetti & Meatballs' steeped in Italian-American culture originating in New York has been a long time personal favourite. Then there's Spain with its 'Albondigas' and the Greek 'Soutzoukakia'. Both have cemented themselves firmly in my children's culinary memory, having traipsed around Europe for much of their childhood. The recipe here is the combination of these influences.

350g ground beef

150g minced lamb

1 egg

2tbs oatmeal

1tbs 'Turkish Bazaar' Spice Blend

1/2tsp salt

1tbs chopped fresh parsley

1tbs chopped fresh mint

Simple combine all this together and form into 12 even balls with your hands.

Rest in the fridge for 20 minutes.

Brown off in a frying pan before baking in the oven with your favourite tomato sauce recipe.

The rich cooking juices from the meat elevate the tomato sauce to sublime & offer up wealth of serving suggestions. My favourite is a generous bowl of fresh tagliatelle, but any pasta would make a great meal.

Of course why not enjoy them as they are with some crusty bread to mop up that divine tomato sauce. Add a crisp cerveza & leave me with memories of Spanish adventures...

Enjoy!
